Wednesdays with Jillene: strongholds

Have you ever thought about what your strongholds are in life? What do you hold most secure, refuse to give up? What do you run to when times are tough? What do you hold most central to your being?

I don’t often think about my strongholds until they are challenged… or until I am in great need of refuge.

Sometimes “strongholds” have to fall because they never really were strong… and they never could hold us anyway. Often the things we hold onto the most are the very things God calls us to lay down for Him. Because God cannot be our stronghold when we have other things in that place!

That can be rough.

Our pride, finances, relationships, talents, plans, dreams… they aren’t meant to be our “strength”, “refuge”, “fortress”, “center” or “haven”…

Sometimes those strongholds have to fall…

Because there is something much better:

I love you, Lord, my strength.

The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer;
my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield[b] and the horn[c] of my salvation, my stronghold.

I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise,
and I have been saved from my enemies.

Psalm 18:1-3

It hurts when my strongholds fall, it’s scary even… but until they fall I am not really resting in true refuge. So sometimes, God takes those away so I can call to the one who is really my strength, my true rock, my deliverer, my shield… my refuge.

My prayer tonight for me, for our campers, for my family/friends, for all of you readers is that you KNOW that God is your true refuge… that you CHOOSE to run to Him as your stronghold… and that in Him you find true SALVATION.
