Symbols and metaphors powerfully remind me of what is true. I wish I could hold onto foundational truths without help, but often I need a little help remembering, something tangible to bring my heart back to what I know. In many ways, that is why I write, stacking words to remember Truth encountered, Love lived, and Glory revealed.
If you look closely, you’ll find symbols woven throughout my daily life… the mugs I carry, the messages on my shirts, my phone screen, the alarms that sound throughout the day, even the jewelry I wear. Each one is a powerful reminder of God’s love, the life He has given me, and the call He has placed on my life.
And, there are times God opens the door to allow the symbolic reminders that are so powerful to me to be shared with others.
This Christmas, God placed a message on my heart to share with the women in my life… a foundational truth I longed for them to know at their core, to stand on, to let fill every fiber of their being. So I gave them a symbol of that truth. Not just something to hold onto… but something to hold them.
And as I placed it in their hands, I knew I wanted to share it with you too. Because…
Sometimes we all need to be reminded of what is true…
when we can’t see it…
when we don’t feel it…
when we aren’t sure we believe it.
That’s the thing about the truth.
What’s true is true even when we don’t understand it…
even when we forget it.
“You’re braver than you believe,
stronger than you seem,
smarter than you think.”
It may have started as a phrase from a children’s cartoon character,
but it is a truth our childlike hearts still need to hear—
no matter our outward age.
I’ve seen this saying shared in moments when words are hard to find,
because the truth is:
life is tough.
days are long.
some seasons are hard.
It’s the kind of sentiment we offer when someone feels small or overwhelmed,
when courage feels thin,
and confidence is running low.
yet, I think there is one more line I would add, one that is of key importance:
“You’re braver than you believe,
stronger than you seem,
smarter than you think,
and loved more than you know.”
It’s powerful because it speaks a truth we desperately want to be true,
even when we cannot quite feel it.
But…
What if this saying has been spoken by Scripture all along—
only deeper…
more secure…
more profoundly true than we ever could?
When I read Romans 8:31–39,
I hear an echo of that familiar saying—
but with a foundation that does not rest on
self-assurance,
self-reliance,
or self-esteem.
Instead, it rests on God’s unwavering faithfulness.
Paul writes,
“If God is for us, who can be against us?” (Romans 8:31)
This is not the language of denial.
Paul does not pretend hardship, fear, or suffering do not exist.
He names them plainly:
trouble, hardship, persecution, famine, danger, sword.
These are not abstract ideas—
they are lived realities.
And yet, none of them gets the final word.
Braver than you believe.
Not because fear disappears,
but because fear no longer defines you.
Stronger than you seem.
Not because you are self-sufficient,
but because you are sustained.
Smarter than you think.
Not because you have all the answers,
but because you are being led by the Spirit.
And then Paul brings us to the heart of it all.
Loved more than you know.
Nothing—
not death or life,
not the present or the future,
not anything in all creation—
can separate you from the love of God
in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:39)
God’s love is not fragile.
It does not withdraw when life is heavy.
It does not falter when you are weary.
So I find myself wanting to reframe that familiar saying—
not to discard it,
but to root it more deeply in truth:
In Christ,
you are braver than fear suggests,
stronger than suffering reveals,
wiser than doubt insists,
and loved beyond anything you can imagine.
This is not optimism.
It is not positive thinking.
It is hope grounded in the unshakeable love of God.
Because if God is for you—
and Scripture assures us that He is—
nothing can stand against you.
Because God loves you.
You are a daughter of the King,
lavished with mercy,
filled with grace,
and loved beyond imagining.
and in God’s love, you are secure. Nothing can take that away… not your distress… no trials you face… not any loss that threatens you… nor any danger that comes your way… nothing can separate you from God’s love, a love beyond anything you can imagine.
